Does Grandparenting Pay off for the Next Generations? Intergenerational Effects of Grandparental Care

چکیده
Grandparents act as the third largest caregiver after parental care and daycare in Germany, many Western societies. Adopting a double-generation perspective, we investigate causal impact of this mode on children's health, socio-emotional behavior, school outcomes, well well-being. Based representative German panel data sets, exploiting arguably exogenous variations geographical distance to grandparents, analyze age-specific effects, taking into account counterfactual modes. Our results suggest null or negative effects outcomes: If children three years older are full-time and, addition, cared for by they have more health problems, particular conduct problems. In contrast, our point positive satisfaction with childcare situation leisure. The mothers correspond an increase 11 percent 14 leisure, compared mean, although differ child age. While paternal is, at 21 percent, even higher, do not find effect

Nongenetic inheritance mechanisms such as transgenerational plasticity (TGP) can buffer populations against rapid environmental change such as ocean warming. Yet, little is known about how long these effects persist and whether they are cumulative over generations. Here, we tested for adaptive TGP in response to simulated ocean warming across parental and grandparental generations of marine sti...
متن کاملDoes Crop Diversification Pay Off
Because of its potential role in providing ecosystem services and private benefits (food security), the concern about the loss of agrobiodiversity has grown. We explore the links between agrobiodiversity and farm financial benefits in small-scale agroecosystems. We measured crop diversity in a subsistence-oriented agricultural production system: home gardens (n=250) in the Iberian Peninsula. We...
متن کاملWhen Does Model-Based Control Pay Off?
Many accounts of decision making and reinforcement learning posit the existence of two distinct systems that control choice: a fast, automatic system and a slow, deliberative system. Recent research formalizes this distinction by mapping these systems to "model-free" and "model-based" strategies in reinforcement learning. Model-free strategies are computationally cheap, but sometimes inaccurate...
